What Is ILADS? Understanding the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Societ

If you've spent any time researching Lyme disease, chances are you've come across the acronym ILADS. But what exactly is ILADS, and why does it matter?

What Is ILADS?

ILADS stands for the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society. It is a nonprofit medical organization dedicated to improving the diagnosis, treatment, and understanding of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses.

Founded in 1999, ILADS brings together physicians, researchers, scientists, healthcare practitioners, and patient advocates who are committed to advancing education and supporting patients affected by tick-borne diseases.

Their mission is simple:

To improve the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme and associated diseases through education, research, and advocacy.

Why Was ILADS Created?

Lyme disease can be difficult to diagnose. Symptoms often mimic other illnesses and may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Joint pain
  • Headaches
  • Brain fog
  • Neurological symptoms
  • Muscle aches
  • Sleep disturbances

Many patients report struggling for months or even years before receiving an accurate diagnosis.

ILADS was established to address these challenges by promoting physician education, encouraging research, and advocating for patient-centered care.

What Does ILADS Do?

ILADS focuses on four key areas:

Education

ILADS provides continuing medical education programs, conferences, webinars, and training opportunities for healthcare professionals.

Research

The organization supports scientific inquiry into Lyme disease, co-infections, diagnostics, and treatment approaches.

Physician Training

ILADS offers mentorship and educational resources to help clinicians develop expertise in recognizing and treating tick-borne illnesses.

Advocacy

ILADS advocates for improved patient access to knowledgeable healthcare providers and increased awareness of the complexities of tick-borne diseases.

What Is an ILADS Ambassador?

An ILADS Ambassador is a volunteer who helps raise awareness about Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses within their community. Ambassadors support the mission of ILADS by sharing educational resources, promoting prevention, and helping connect people with reliable information.

ILADS Ambassadors come from many different backgrounds. Some are patients who have experienced Lyme disease firsthand, while others are healthcare professionals, parents, educators, outdoor enthusiasts, or community leaders committed to reducing the impact of tick-borne illnesses.

As an ILADS Ambassador, individuals may:

  • Educate their communities about tick bite prevention
  • Share evidence-based Lyme disease resources
  • Raise awareness about the signs and symptoms of tick-borne illnesses
  • Support educational initiatives and outreach programs
  • Help families understand where to find credible information and medical education resources

The ambassador program recognizes that awareness is one of the most powerful tools in the fight against Lyme disease. By encouraging prevention, early recognition, and informed decision-making, ambassadors help people spend more time outdoors with greater confidence.

Why I Became an ILADS Ambassador

As the founder of TickOffTicks, I believe prevention is our first line of defense against tick-borne disease.

Every year, more Canadians are encountering ticks in places they never expected—from neighbourhood parks and schoolyards to hiking trails, camps, and cottage properties.

Becoming an ILADS Ambassador allows me to support a broader mission: helping families understand the risks, recognize the signs of tick-borne illness, and take practical steps to protect themselves.

My goal is simple: empower people with knowledge so they can enjoy the outdoors safely and confidently.

Lyme Disease Is More Than a Tick Bite

Ticks can carry multiple pathogens, including bacteria, parasites, and viruses. In some cases, individuals may experience ongoing symptoms that require further medical evaluation and care.

ILADS encourages healthcare providers to consider a patient's complete clinical picture, including exposure history, symptoms, laboratory testing, and response to treatment.

Resources for Patients

ILADS offers educational materials, webinars, physician training programs, conferences, and a provider search tool that may help patients locate healthcare practitioners familiar with tick-borne illnesses.

Whether you're newly diagnosed, supporting a loved one, or simply trying to learn more about Lyme disease prevention, education remains one of the most powerful tools available.

Prevention Matters

At TickOffTicks, we believe the best approach to Lyme disease is prevention.

Protective clothing, regular tick checks, prompt tick removal, and awareness of tick habitats can all help reduce the risk of exposure.

Prevention doesn't mean avoiding the outdoors—it means being prepared.

Knowledge empowers families to spend more time exploring, hiking, gardening, camping, and foraging with confidence.

Because understanding Lyme disease starts long before a tick bite happens.

At TickOffTicks, our mission extends beyond clothing. Through education, advocacy, and prevention, we hope to help families spend more time outdoors—and worry less about ticks.
